At Star Medical Associates, we aim to make healthcare simple. This FAQ section answers common questions about our services, physician-led approach, and how we support both patients and providers.
What is Star Medical Associates (Star)?
Star Medical Associates (Star) is an Independent Physician Association (IPA) based out of Los Angeles, CA with networks throughout Southern California. We contract with health plans to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for members.
How does Star work with my health plan?
Your health plan requires you to select a primary care physician (PCP). By selecting a Star PCP, you will be included as a member of our network and will have access to specialists and services throughout the Star network and hospitals. Your PCP, along with our group, will manage your care. Your insurance provider sets your benefits, such as co-payments for doctor visits or emergency room visits.
How do I enroll in Star?
Verify you have an HMO health insurance plan affiliated with Star Medical Associates IPA. When your HMO health plan is one of our contracted health plans, you will be able to select Star Medical Associates IPA as your medical group and select your primary care physician (PCP). For begin enrollment into a health plan contracted with Star, please visit joinstarmedical.com or call (855) STAR-IPA for assistance.
Where is Star available?
Star is currently available throughout California counties of Los Angeles and Riverside. Star will be available in Nevada and Arizona in 2025.
What is the role of my Primary Care Physician (PCP)?
A primary care physician (PCP) is your main healthcare provider and the first point of contact for all your medical needs. They handle routine checkups, preventive care, and treatment of common illnesses or conditions. Your PCP also coordinates your overall care, referring you to specialists or arranging hospital services when necessary, ensuring you receive comprehensive and continuous care throughout your healthcare journey.
What do I do in a medical emergency?
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency (e.g., a sudden onset of chest pain), you should always call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
